It does not matter what day it is, what year it is, or what your political stance is when it comes to Real Estate. This is a very charged statement so keep reading before you start getting heated. Real Estate goes much further than just buying a home to live in for the next 30 years. Hopefully this quick post can help give some insight to what that means exactly.
Would it be fair to say that most people don’t even consider Real Estate until it comes time to buy or sell a home? Tons of people every day are looking for a place to live or a place to move to. The other majority of people are going about their days as though none of that even matters. Such is with many things in life. It’s not important until it’s important to you. Please allow me just a little bit of time to explain how a change in this mind set could turn a nation. Yes, I said “turn a nation”!
Before we could read or write, before we had weapons, before we knew how to protect ourselves from predators it was our “homes” that gave us shelter. Sometimes I feel as thought I live in a cave. The kids have drawn on the walls, there’s stuffed animals and dinosaur strewn across the floors, and I’m constantly have to go to the grocery store for more meat! In all seriousness, having a shelter was ingrained in our DNA from day one. You can bet your last dollar that no one (even if they claim it for a while) enjoys being homeless.
In a way, we are all searching for security, safety, and shelter. Does this mean our world revolves around Real Estate?? Really think about that question for just a minute. The very definition of our world, our “home planet”, is a place we belong to. Each area of Earth is divided into continents, oceans, countries, states, counties, cities, neighborhoods, and properties. I’d venture to say that the world does revolve around Real Estate, or more directly, is Real Estate!
Every single person that has ever or will ever live on Earth has longed for a place that belongs to them. Some are afraid of commitment and responsibility while others are simply ignorant to how owning Real Estate actually works. In the future I plan to write on these objections to homeownership, but today I want to focus on the alternative: Those that long to have a piece of God’s green Earth that belongs to them. What an interesting idea, that we can obtain a portion of this great planet floating through the vast universe. Every war that has been waged was fought over a person, power, and/or property. As much as I’d love to add peace to that list, it’s my understanding that peace is a byproduct of power. We can dive deeper into that in a sub thread. The point is that property is worth more than money. The land we live in, as Americans, was fought for. Columbus and his actions aside, men fought and died for use to have this land. When you enter into a contract to purchase a property, you are etching your name into the very bedrock of history. When your time is up, the land goes to the next person you will it to. What other possessions can last from generation to generation like land?
When McDonald’s opened their first burger restaurant the goal was to serve an affordable delicious burger. Once it became popular and they realized they would need to expand, the goal changed. See, McDonald’s is not worth $185,000,000,000 today because they have affordable delicious burgers. Their goal was to own as much Real Estate as possible. Then how do you make that piece if land create cash flow? Burgers! That’s right, McDonald’s literally owns its own Real Estate company.
One more incredible fact most people don’t know: When you buy Real Estate, you purchase a certain amount of the air above your property and a certain amount of dirt beneath your property. Recently (within the last 70 years), other countries have begun to buy the rights to the air above buildings. The property owners didn’t care, they were selling unused air. That’s a no brainer, right? Wrong! What happened was that as the area grew that land was turned into businesses. Then they needed to build skyscrapers to increase the economy, however they didn’t own the rights to the air above them and therefore were forced to stay 3-4 story’s tall. This is why purchasing Real Estate matters! We are not buying property for only us today. We are securing a future for the next generations, and every Real Estate transaction either strengthens or weakens our economy now and in the future.
At the beginning I said, “It does not matter what day it is, what year it is, or what your political stance is when it comes to Real Estate.” I stand by this statement, and this is why. Land is land today, tomorrow, and forever. You can buy it and leave it vacant. The property could be purchased and turn into a beautiful home for your family. You might even be ready to build your own skyscraper. The issue is, at any time, that can be brought right back to being just land. What matters is that you own the land, build your dream, create a successful economy, and either sell it or pass it on to someone to keep your dream alive.
Would you agree, it does not matter what day it is, what year it is, or what your political stance is when it comes to Real Estate? What matters is that we all take our opportunity to etch our names into the bedrock of history, build our dreams, and keep the future safe, secure, and sheltered!
